Fire at Hermann High School

On Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at approximately 9:45 p.m. a fire ignited in the industrial arts shop at Hermann High School. The custodians on duty attempted to extinguish the fire as the Hermann Fire Department arrived on scene. The custodian was able to prevent the fire from expanding beyond the location or spreading to the roof of the building. The Hermann Fire Department extinguished the fire upon arrival. As well, the Department inspected the building for other dangers. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

The crew of employees that arrived on site were able to remove water from the tile floors and secure the building. We are very fortunate in our school and community to have patrons and employees who genuinely care. The firefighters, as well as the employees, went above and beyond expectations to preserve our building. We are grateful for their service and commitment.

On Wednesday, a cleaning company was contacted to begin the concentrated effort of restoring the building to its previous condition. Approximately one-third of the building will be closed during the cleaning process due to the smoke and water damage caused by the fire. Additionally, the Gasconade County Health Department approved the preparation and serving of food in the building. The fire alarm system is once again functioning, providing safety for our students and staff. Finally, preparation has taken place to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for all HHS students.

The students are back in the classroom this morning in every building. Student engagement for high levels of learning is our priority. We will ensure learning is taking place in this seamless transition.
