Dr. Scott Smith announced as new Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Scott A. Smith is named Gasconade County R-1 School District Superintendent for the 2018-2019 school year.

Dr. Smith will join the Gasconade County R-1 team on July 1, 2018, as the new Superintendent of Schools. This announcement follows a special board meeting that was held on Saturday, March 3rd. Dr. Smith brings 20 years of teaching and leadership experience to Gasconade County. His recent experience includes his service the past five years as assistant superintendent of the West Plains R-VII School District.

Prior to his tenure as assistant superintendent, he served as principal of the West Plains Middle School for five years and South Fork Elementary school for three years. Dr. Smith began his educational career in 1998 as an elementary teacher and coach in Neelyville, MO, and later Doniphan, MO.  

Dr. Smith received his Doctorate degree in educational leadership from Saint Louis University (SLU) in 2013, after previously earning his Educational Specialist degree from Southeast Missouri State University. His undergraduate degree is from Arkansas State University.

Dr. Smith will join the Hermann community along with his wife of 12 years, Amanda, and their three daughters.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Gasconade County R-1,” said Smith. “As I have met the board, administrators, community members and toured the school facilities, I have been thoroughly impressed!  Having grown up in a small town in southern Missouri, I appreciate the sense of community and pride for the school system.  I believe Gasconade County will be a great fit for myself and my family.”

Smith serves on the board of the West Plains Optimist Club where he chairs the oratorical/essay scholarship program. He is also a member of the West Plains Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Association of School Administrators, and Missouri Association of School Business Officials. In addition, he is involved in the 4H program and assists with youth athletic programs.

Dr. Smith will begin his transition to Gasconade County by attending board meetings and district events, as his availability will allow, before his official start date of July 1, 2018.

About our school district...

Approximately 965 students are enrolled in the three schools operated by the Gasconade County R-I School District. Children in pre-kindergarten through grade 4 attend Hermann Elementary School. Hermann Middle School serves students in grades 5 through 8. Finally, Hermann High School, opened in 2000, houses students grades 9 through 12.

The District is located in the community of Hermann, Missouri and encompasses a portion of four counties, Franklin, Gasconade, Montgomery, and Warren in Missouri.

The district is governed by an elected 7 member board of education. The assessed valuation of the school district is approximately $119.5 million. The school system operates on a budget of approximately $12.2 million. 

The Gasconade Co. R-I School District emphasizes academic excellence for all students. Students thrive in a culture that emphasizes hard work, respect, and dignity. The district is fully accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Student leadership sets the expectation for these core values in each of the three district buildings.

The district provides a full complement of extra-curricular activities, offering excellent facilities for student athletes, musicians, and thespians. Co-curricular activities for vocational programs help develop tomorrow’s leaders.
